Program Update: Collaborative Efforts Expand Supportive Housing

The success of Miriam’s House in effectively serving our neighbors experiencing homelessness has always been about collaboration and strategic teamwork! One of the most powerful examples of this approach is the recent partnership between Miriam’s House, Rush Homes, and the Lynchburg Redevelopment & Housing Authority, which resulted in local expansion of supportive housing for chronically homeless households.

Rush Homes, a nonprofit dedicated to the development of affordable housing, has long been a partner of Miriam’s House. Many of our past and current clients now call a Rush Homes rental unit their home. In 2024, Rush completed their Florida Terrace project, which included eight set-aside supportive housing units for chronically homeless individuals.

The Lynchburg Redevelopment & Housing Authority played a crucial role by providing project-based vouchers to the units which allowed the rent amount to be based on each resident’s income.

Miriam’s House rounded out the partnership by providing a dedicated Housing Case Manager to work with each of the eight chronically homeless households—helping them increase their income, comply with lease requirements, access community resources, and build the stability needed for long-term housing success.

The solution to homelessness is affordable housing coupled with supportive services. This project is such an incredible example of the teamwork required to provide life-changing solutions to those experiencing chronic homelessness.

No one understands the importance of this project more than Larry.

For many years, Larry experienced homelessness in our community, sleeping in an abandoned building without access to water or electricity. After suffering a stroke that left him disabled, he was unable to support himself through employment. In 2024, Larry’s long journey of homelessness came to an end when he moved into a supportive housing unit at Florida Terrace and began working with Miriam's House Housing Case Manager, Angela.

Over the past year, Larry has made friends with his neighbors, secured disability income, reconnected with family members, and gained access to medical care through Community Access Network.

Today, Larry is thriving, and we are honored to walk alongside him as he rebuilds his life. This project is proof that when organizations come together with a shared mission, we can create real, lasting solutions to homelessness in our community.

Housing changes everything—and you can be part of the solution. When you support Miriam’s House, you help neighbors like Larry move from homelessness into a place of stability, dignity, and hope. Together, we can create more stories of transformation in our community.
