Miriam’s House: What have you learned about homelessness in the three years you’ve worked here?

Angela: One of the many things that I have learned in the three years that I have worked at Miriam’s House is that Housing First works. It is extremely difficult and oftentimes impossible for someone to manage chronic health conditions, mental health, or substance use issues while trying to survive on the street or in a vehicle. Permanent, stable housing is essential for all other life improvements. Once housed, a person can then focus on higher-level goals like managing their health, treatment, finding stability, connecting with community, finding employment, etc. When someone has a choice in their housing and the services that they receive, they are more likely to remain housed.

How would you describe your job to someone unfamiliar with your work?

I provide supportive services to clients who were chronically homeless and now are living in stable housing. As a case manager I wear many different hats: I’m an advocate, a resource navigator, a coach, a cheerleader, a bridge builder, etc.

What is your favorite thing about working at Miriam’s House?

My favorite thing about working at Miriam’s House is the cohesiveness of our team.

What’s something you wish the whole community knew about the work that we do?

I wish the whole community knew that we work diligently together in a coordinated effort to ensure that our homeless neighbors are provided with the supports, resources, and tools needed to come out of homelessness.
