At Miriam’s House, we strive to create a consistent
and predictable atmosphere for the residents, many
of whose lives have included times of great chaos
and instability. We ask our volunteers to be willing
to make a long-term (at least one year), steady
commitment to our community.
Current Volunteer Need
We have long held a dream of creating a “sacred” or
“healing” garden in our back yard. Due to the
expense, all we have been able to do so far is put
up a wrought iron fence. This fall 500 square feet
of museum-quality limestone paving blocks was
donated to us. We would love to find a Stone
Mason to install this beautiful material. Then
we would need volunteer Gardners to help us
landscape and plant.
Interns
Every year we hire three Resident Interns who live
on-site, participate in community life and fulfill
staff functions (Community Builder, Program
Assistant, and Outreach Coordinator). Applicants
must have a current, valid driver’s license; a
Bachelor’s Degree or relevant life experience;
experience with homeless women or persons living
with AIDS helpful but not necessary. The term is
from August to August. Interested individuals may
contact Miriam’s House any time of year for more
information.
Weekly Volunteers
At this time, we have volunteers who come either
weekly or twice a month; one teaches us how to make
quilts, and the other teaches us how to knit. Other
volunteers have included massage therapists, a
healing touch therapist, and tutors for residents
who need help studying for their G.E.D. We would
love to hear from you if you can make a steady
commitment for about a year, and have a skill or
talent to share with the women.
Board of Directors
Washington, DC metro area residents are encouraged
to consider participation on one of the Board
Committees or as a Board Member. Contact us through
this website, and staff will connect you to a Board
member. Board members commit to one three-year term
that can be extended another three years.
